Turkish Refugee Camp

I have to say my neighbors are not selfish! There may be certain things that are hard to understand sometimes in their culture, but one thing I admire about the Kurds is that they are always willing to help. They are not rich, they are not successful in the world's eyes, yet they always have another spot in their home, they always have a full plate to give and a cup of tea to share. All we had to do was say the word and the donations came pouring in for the Turkish-Kurdish refugees.
Here is the camp...they now have electricity, but no running water. Each family has a little trailer...just one room to sleep in. The cement building on the right is their "kitchen".
We unloaded the stuff. What was really special is that they didn't all dive for it as sometimes these things can be. They all just stood around and some were a little embarrassed. But they were all thankful.
One family is still living in this tent.
My amazing, fearless, beautiful friend Dawn shared so beautifully with the women, since she can speak Turkish! Look how the women are locked into her story. I love being around Dawn! She is an inspiration!
The families are all related, so they slowly started dividing everything up equally.
The kids made paper airplanes for their little ones. So fun to see them so excited about a piece of paper! The story has only just begun for them. Our prayer is that they felt the physical, tangible love of God and will want to know more. We were able to pray for a few people and are hoping they felt his touch.

Easy-Bake Baker!

Annie mixed up her first cookie to bake for 6 to 8 minutes...which turned into 30 minutes or more...
so she took a few spins on her new scooter...another find in the used bazaar.

the cookie ended up a little gooey...but she loved it anyway!

Christmas Dinner!

We all went to the Houghs for dinner. We had a great meal and then the kids each decorated their own letter J-E-S-U-S for his birthday cake!
 I guess it's pretty exciting...
...some people are more serious about their cake decorating...
Happy Birthday Jesus!

Christmas Morning!

We started off the morning by lighting our candles
Reading our advent stories...including Jotham's Journey! Intense story!
Then we acted out The Story...Jesse was Joseph this year and baby Jesus was played by this doll...better than the bunny last year...
LOVED our Jesse Tree this year.
My nativity set took up half a trunk and it was SO worth it!
 Sweet.
 The tree was FULL!
 stockings were hung with care.
The Holy Family, plus a shepherd.
Mary came in on a donkey...this year the donkey decided to buck and he-haw and tried to steal the show.
he even took over reading while the Angel played her important role.
Then it was time for presents...love this picture of Toby thanking Jesse for his new "police" set.
The sisters joined us for the morning. They thought the donkey was hilarious...personally I think the angel deserves more attention! But they loved it. The kids made them each a little gift and they had several gifts to open. They said it was the best Christmas they had. We felt so honored to have them join us.
Best gift for Toby...a marine jacket from Uncle Ben and Aunt Mandi...first glimpse.
Then he sees his name embroidered on it.
So proud to wear it...it was worn by Uncle Ben and Aunt Mandi while serving overseas. So special.
sweet present and hug from Jesse...a car that vacuums.
 plaid slippers for old Dad!
 umbrella for Toby
best find for Annie was an Easy-Bake at a used bazaar...she was so thrilled!
 race track for the boys...
Jesse bought Tim a chain. He was so proud of it. Last year he bought Tim a chain and Tim used it to hang a lamp over our bed. Jesse was devastated. The chain was supposed to be a weapon for Tim. So this year Tim promised to save it for a weapon.
sweet bazaar sunglasses...he went around with one-armed glasses for months
Annie found these cool gloves and glasses for the boys. We had a simple and perfect morning and we were able to enjoy each other and each moment. I was so proud of the kids ...they had such thankful hearts the whole time.

Christmas Eve!

This is the first year that we decided to let the kids in on our Christmas Eve tradition of fondu. We still dipped it for them...but they enjoyed it!
Cheese fondu...we found Emmenthaler cheese and wine (shhhh... don't worry we only used it to cook with). we dipped bread and peppers and carrots and apples.
The chocolate fondu was stellar with pound cake and bananas!
We let the kids each open one gift! Waiting in suspense...
New clothes from the used bazaar! cutie!
Stud...I didn't even tell them to pose!
New tradition...sleeping by the tree! so fun.

Hawser's Wedding

We went to a friend's wedding this week. Had to get a family picture while we are all dressed up.
Even us country folk clean up real good...
GIRLS! Annie's got her Kurdi smile on!
They westernized their event a little, by having the groom's brother walk her in and Hawser was standing in a tux waiting for her. Then they kissed!! WOW! Shocking PDA! So cute though.
Cake time...which involves the sister doing a little dance with a big sword...also Fanta in fancy glasses.
The cake was a bit of a disaster...confetti...a little much...but the sparkler candles...NICE!! Nothing says classy like candles spraying sparks off your cake!
Oh...you cut the cake with the giant sword! Must be some tradition from way back when they all used to carry their swords all the time in case some brawl broke out!
 more PDA!
insane amounts of dancing and pop spilled all over the floor, very loud music, sweating and lots of trilling! Good old fashioned wedding!
