So we were just minding our own business and the neighbors came running to get our kids to tell them to come see the puppies up on the hill! Sure enough, there they were. There were 8 of them...but only 4 were still alive. There eyes were still closed and they were crying like babies. I didn't even think...I just piled them on to this bag and carried them straight home.
Their little tongues were all black and dried out and they were so dehydrated. Dogs are so abused here. You can't possibly imagine. They are so bedraggled and sorry, but also mean because people hurt them and throw things at them and children torture them. So these sweet puppies don't even stand a chance. If you know me, I don't like dog hair or dog poop or any kind of dog mess. But puppies that cry like babies just get to me. I had to do something.
We dropper fed milk to them all day and put them in front of our heater. Their little tongues and noses turned pink again. But in the end Tim said they had to go. But there is no shelter. So the best we could do was take them back to where we found them.
This was a dream come true for Annie. She wanted to be with them all day long. She fed them, held them, rocked them, sang to them and put them to sleep. She has been praying that a dog would show up on our doorstep and we could keep it. But we have no way of getting these dogs shots or taking care of them.
So we let Annie take care of them and have a blissful evening with them.
She named them all...this one was Spot. We took them all back up the hill and heard a dog bark and prayed it was the Momma coming back to care for them...in the end...several days later they were all dead. It was really painful for all of us. But we had a fun day...just another adventure for us. We are thankful for the one day we got to help these creatures. We seriously freaked out our neighbors though and they thought we would all come down with some terrible disease, but we surprised them all by remaining quite healthy. Come on all you animal rights activists...come to Iraq!
