Birthdays!

Kurds never really know when their birthdays are. there are no official records kept on them. They all seem to have the same birthday. Most of them say January 1st or June 1st. But our two neighbor girls both had birthdays in April...suspiciously one day after each other. I am not sure if that was...oh your birthday is then, my birthday is one day BEFORE yours...at any rate. I love birthday parties for kids. So I offered my help. I was given this bundt cake and whip cream and told to create...so it's not one of my better cakes, but the neighbors called me a "cake wasta"...which is the word they use for handyman. Recently also my language teacher told me my gift was making cakes. i never saw that one in the list before...but i do like to love people through making cakes.
This party, for Reggie, one of Annie's friends was quite the affair. The mom went all out and everyone got very dressed up and put on LOTS of make up.
I was given tinsel strands and told to create decorations...they thought they were beautiful. i thought they were hideous.
I was even forced to wear make up...
the painted women!
the next day was our dear Zeelan's 12th birthday. Her whole family was out of town and she had been spending the week with us. For months now, she has been talking about wanting a guitar and wanting to learn how to play. Unfortunately we can't just buy her a guitar...although i would love to. So i made this cake for, asked her what her favorite food was (hoping it wasn't dolma) and threw her a little surprise party. She came home from school at lunch to a room full of people, fresh home made pizza and a guitar cake!
She was thoroughly surprised and the cake disappeared minutes later!
The next day i got to help her get ready for her big end-of-the-year school picnic. She had to make food and get all dressed up! It was a little crazy and hectic, but thanks to Laura we were able to make her enchiladas (her request) and an Iranian salad of some kind and get her out the door in time! I felt like I was sending my daughter off to prom or something!
