Project Green

So I have been having these dreams of cleaning up our little town since we moved here! the amount of trash here is UNBELIEVABLE! It's really quite sickening actually! It destroys so much of the natural beauty and the people do not even seem to care. they push trash out of their homes and into the street and as soon as it has cleared about 10 feet from their home, they don't care. The children grow up getting a bag of chips, scarfing it down and dropping the bag wherever they are standing. Only now they have learned that if they drop it within my sight they will get a stern look and a tongue lashing! I have also threatened fines! But somehow between dishes, home school, language study and other random things, my dreams have not materialized. But this week I decided, well it has to start somewhere. So the kids and I grabbed a roll of garbage bags and marched out on the street to declare war against the trash!
Before I even got out of my yard the kids came out in droves and grabbed bags and ran for the trash! They were SO excited to start working! Before long they were dragging their bags back FULL of trash!
I have high hopes of training these little offenders into recyclers or at least throwing it into a trash can! I spurred them on with encouragements and declared that we would have the cleanest street in our whole town! Pretty soon we had women poking their heads out their gates. Two women came out to scold me and tell this was a dirty thing to do, but I convinced them that we MUST do something and before long they too were bending over and getting their hands dirty! It was exhilarating to be out there! Several women just watched from their roofs or gates, but everyone saw and everyone was talking about it afterwards!
Here's my little crew of helpers...I know an astonishing amount of red clothing. By the end of the time, which was only about an hour or less, we had lined our road with 51 large garbage bags FULL of trash! I was astonished and amazed! One girl collected 12 all on her own!
Of course the day wouldn't be complete without getting a nice cool treat! Today the kids came knocking on my gate, in the rain, wondering when we were going to collect trash next! It seems Project Green is off its feet!
